About the new Pfizer drug called
Slentrol

Introduction

It is extremely difficult to loss weight using traditional methods of diet and exercise.

But it's extremely important toward making your pet happier, healthier, and longer lived.

We now know that fat pets are fat partly because they exercise too little and are fed too much ... but also because fat animals don't have normal responses to the hormones that limit appetite.  We also know that fat pets produce enyzmes and hormones that reduce fat metabolism making weight loss even more difficult.

Now for the good news; we can now successfully treat obesity medically with a new FDA approved, inexpensive medication called Slentrol.

When fat is digested, the intestinal cell is supposed to release a compound called Leptin into the bloodstream that tells the brain to stop being hungry.  Slentrol is a Long acting Leptin substitute and it works.  It takes about 3-6 weeks, but your dog's appetite will be greatly reduced and your dog will start losing about 1% of weight EACH WEEK.

Slentrol:

...Is almost side effect free; like many other medications, some dogs experience a small rise in liver enzymes.  Also; about 1 in 4 dogs vomit one time when they first start the medication.

...Is relatively inexpensive; about $35-45 a month for 4-8 months depending on the size of your dog.

...Is 97% EFFECTIVE   I didn't think any medication was 97% effective.

...stops begging.  Dogs are no longer always hungry.  This makes dieting a LOT easier.

Here's What I Recommend if you want a normal weight dog that will live longer, live healthier, and live happier:

...Blood work to make sure your dog doesn't have diabetes, liver disease, thyroid disease, or other problems.

...Slowly reduce the amount of food you feed your dog and substitute low calorie treats for left overs and regular doggie treats.  Because the diet must contain a normal amount of fat in it for Slentrol to work effectively,  it's best NOT to feed a low calorie diet while on Slentrol.  The ideal diet for losing weight while on Slentrol is Eukanuba Salmon and Rice or Hill's JD Joint diet.  Salmon is high in the healthiest type of fat; Omega 3 which helps reduce inflammation of the skin and joints ... and helps improve kidney, vascular, and heart health.

...Come in once a month for a weigh in and to adjust the amount of Slentrol given to achieve 1% weight loss.  There's no charge for this value added service.

One of the very best diets to use with Slentrol is Eukanuba's Salmon and Rice Diet.  Slentrol works by keeping dietary fat inside intestinal cells where it stimulates the production of PYY; the peptide that signals the brain that you're full and no longer hungry.  Salmon oil is the healthiest type of dietary fat I know of and super healthy for skin, inflammation, joints, heart, and kidney.

I've written a lot about obesity as a disease on my main veterinary information site.  Please click here to learn about the new information regarding fat tissue.

New medical information tells us that adipose (fat) tissue produces hormones and enzymes that CAUSE INFLAMMATION.

Fat dogs live, on average 1.8 years LESS than non fat dogs.

Weight loss programs based on reduced calories and exercise alone fail more often than they succeed.

Pfizer has introduced the first FDA approved weight loss medication for dogs and it works.

I'm very excited about this new medication.  Obesity is the most common endocrine disease in dogs... more common than diabetes, thyroid disease, pancreatitis, and Cushings disease combined ... and now we can successfully treat this disease, prolong your pet's life, and make your pet feel better.

By making your fat pet normal in weight, we can often stop or reduce the pain medications needed in arthritic dogs.  We can often stop or reduce insulin use in diabetic dogs.  We can prevent the likelihood of cancer.  And in all cases we can reduce inflammation and make your pet more comfortable.  Frequent GI upset, gas, and skin problems are also often improved once a pet reaches normal weight.
